Impact of a Videoconferencing Educational Program for the Management of Concurrent Disorders on Nurses' Competency Development and Clinical Practice

A mixed-method study in Quebec, Canada, will assess the impact of the videoconferencing (VC)-focused Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) program for continuing professional development (CPD) on nurses' competency and clinical practice in the management of concurrent disorders (CDs). The authors will collect and analyze quantitative (QUAN) and qualitative (QUAL) data from the program simultaneously and independently, and then combine it in the final integration. In this step, the knowledge yield through the independent QUAN/QUAL analyses will realize a greater overall holistic value. The ECHO model will apply VC technology to link professionals across multiple settings and field in real-time educative sessions with an interdisciplinary team of CD experts. In addition to surveys, nurses will be invited to take part in individual semi-structured interviews. In-depth QUAL data be thematically analyzed and help in investigating how and under which conditions nurses developed and mobilized their competencies in clinical practice. The overall objective is to inform recommendations for effectively supporting nurses in acquiring a high level of CD management competency.
