A recent study sought to evaluate the feasibility of integrating a Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) program within a nine-month pilot nurse residency program and measure the effect on participants' stress, anxiety, mindfulness and resilience relative to a comparison group. The researchers employed a pre- and post-intervention survey design, with measurements recorded at baseline and at 1, 3, 9 and 12 months after the survey. The authors enrolled 51 registered nurses, split into a 23-person intervention and a 28-person comparison group, at a Midwestern U.S. academic medical center. Intervention group members had a participation rate of 93% to 100% with SMART program events. Significant improvements were observed for stress, mindfulness and resilience in the intervention group versus the comparison group. "Further research is needed to determine the proper dose of the intervention and methods to enhance adherence," the authors concluded.
