Physician Board Certification Continues to Grow — 920,000+ in U.S. Are Board Certified

The latest American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Board Certification Report highlights the continued expansion of board-certified physicians across the United States. The study estimates that more than 920,000 physicians in the country are certified, which represents a 4.5% increase from 880,000 two years ago. Just 10 states accounted for more than half of that number. The report delves into the 40 specialty and 87 subspecialty certification programs administered by ABMS' 24 Member Boards. The boards awarded 31,933 new specialty certificates and 13,434 new subspecialty certificates last year. The study also noted that 59% of ABMS board-certified clinicians were medical specialists, 27% were surgical specialists and 14% were hospitalists.
