Health Systems Science: Essential Knowledge to Combat a Pandemic

The American Medical Association's (AMA) Victoria Stagg Elliott, MA, writes that Health Systems Science (HSS) offers critical knowledge for fighting a pandemic that is relevant to the COVID-19 crisis. The HSS platform is part of AMA's Accelerating Change in Medical Education initiative, and the second edition includes a hypothetical scenario on combating an infectious disease outbreak. A core functional domain of HSS essential to dealing with COVID-19 is understanding population and public health. Another core component is understanding the structural and social determinants of health. Additional core domains focus on leadership, teamwork, clinical informatics and systems thinking. Elliott says people knowledgeable of these domains can apply that knowledge to improve their response to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as to future crises.
