ABMS News Release (12/11/19) Knight, Clif
American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Senior Vice President for Education Clif Knight, MD, CPE, FAAFP, discusses his organization's partnership with the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). He writes that AAFP aims to help members gain clinical expertise by providing "broad scope, [and] personalized learning opportunities for members through relevant educational venues and formats." ABFM this year launched the Family Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment, a pilot option offering a longitudinal approach to knowledge assessment, as a substitute for the board's proctored exam. Knight also cites infrastructure for concurrently approving AAFP-accredited continuing medical education activities as ABFM-accredited performance improvement activities when the sponsoring organization claims to meet required criteria. "We believe that regular, frequent communication and collaboration between AAFP and ABFM allows both organizations to more effectively meet the needs and expectations of our shared family physician constituency and promote the specialty of Family Medicine in order to improve the health of individuals, families, and communities," he concludes.
