Rheumatology providers and experts are tapping podcasts as a resource for transforming medical education, aided by rollouts from major publications like the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. A 2014 poll found that 35% of U.S. medical residents spend more time listening to podcasts, versus 33.6% who mainly read textbooks. Most respondents found podcasts to be of greater benefit, with 70% endorsing them as a mode of learning compared with 54.3% who favor textbooks. Cleveland Clinic's Adam J. Brown, MD, who hosts the Healio podcast "Rheuminations," said podcasts' key advantage for learners is immediacy, and he can issue a podcast about an important study or announcement within a few days of its release. Brown added that podcasts can offer more subtle information than textbooks, providing a forum for different specialists to voice their viewpoints.
