Continuing Board Certification: Achieving the Vision Task Forces Named

ABMS News Release (07/11/19)

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has named five task forces that will work to implement key recommendations outlined in the final report of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission. The Advancing Practice Task Force will work to identify practice environmental changes to support learning and improvement activities that yield data-driven advances in physicians' clinical practice. The Information and Data Sharing Task Force will recommend the necessary processes and infrastructure for enabling data and information sharing between ABMS Member Boards and key stakeholders to support the development of future educational and evaluation programs and activities. The Professionalism Task Force will address the aspirational commission recommendation urging ABMS and Member Boards' development of strategies for assessing professionalism and professional standing, collaborate with other stakeholder organizations to probe approaches to future evaluation, and improve consistency in judgments about professional standing. The Remediation Task Force will characterize aspects and avenues for remediation of gaps before certification loss and pathways for reinstating eligibility after loss. Finally, the Standards Task Force will devise new continuing certification standards, aligned with commission recommendations, to be deployed by the ABMS Member Boards, with members securing appropriate feedback from practicing physicians and other stakeholders.
