IPEC: What Is the Interprofessional Education Collaborative?

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) was launched a decade ago by six national health professional educational associations "to promote and encourage constituent efforts that would advance substantive interprofessional learning experiences to help prepare future health professionals for enhanced team-based care of patients and improved population health outcomes." IPEC has specified four core competencies for guiding both patient care and professional collaboration. The core competencies focus on values and ethics for interprofessional practice, roles and responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork. These competencies are further divided into more than three dozen sub-competencies, which are listed in IPEC's Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: 2016 Update.
