U.S. medical and nursing schools are rethinking their teaching curricula and methods, an issue gaining urgency with a shortage of primary caregivers on the horizon. Efforts include a redesign of healthcare education emphasizing more community-based clinic rotations, special programs and scholarships for rural and underserved students, and a larger role for nurses and nurse practitioners. Emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented-reality software, and high-fidelity simulations are valuable elements of this redesign as well. The growing affordability of tools such as VR goggles and software libraries is transforming students' acquisition of science content, while skill learning also is changing. Nontech innovations essential to next-generation medical education include familiarizing students with the way the healthcare system functions and its implications for patients.
