American Board of Medical Specialties Releases Updated Board Certification Report

ABMS News Release (10/08/18)

A new report from the American Board of Medical Specialties shows that more than 880,000 U.S. physicians have obtained board certification. The latest ABMS Board Certification Report also notes that the states with the highest numbers of active physician certificates are California, New York, and Texas. The report offers comprehensive details about the specialty and subspecialty certification programs offered by the 24 Member Boards. Last year, more than 32,300 new specialty certificates and nearly 12,000 new subspecialty certificates were awarded. In addition, 2017 saw the first exam administered in Addiction Medicine, while Neurological Care is the most recently approved subspecialty certification.

According to the ABMS report, several Member Boards—including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pathology—now offer Focused Practice designations. “For 45 years, this report illustrates the continued importance of board certification as a public credential,” ABMS notes in its release. “It also shows the growing population of physicians who believe in board certification as a way to demonstrate their specialty expertise and continued commitment to provide safe, quality patient care.”
